Australia has 50 billionaires – 5 of them are women

Gretel Packer’s expected to become our 50th billionaire, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

That’s a lot of billionaires we’ve got here. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of them are female.

Packer’s rise on the mega rich list raises the number of women taking on individual spots according to the BRW research from four to five.

At the top of the very short female billionaire rich list is Gina Rinehart – who also holds pole position in the overall list with an estimated worth of just over $14 billion.

She’s joined by sisters Leonie Baldock and Alexandra Burt (sharing the 22nd spot with $1.7 billion) as well as new 2015 entrant Judith Neilson (former spouse of fund manager Kerr Neilson, and now worth $1.55 billion) and mining heiress Angela Bennett (reportedly worth $1.53 billion).

Vicky Teoh and her husband David share the 13th spot with $2.3 billion, Vicky’s personal fortune is estimated at just shy of the $1 billion mark, at $938 million. BRW lists her as our richest “self-made woman”.

Gretel Packer’s wealth has increased dramatically following a new deal with brother James over the Packer family fortune, reportedly worth more than $1 billion.

James, meanwhile, is expected to retain his 7th spot on the Rich List – despite his wealth dwindling to $5.1 billion.

Meanwhile, BRW’s 2015 Rich Women list highlights some women to watch in the future.

Unfortunately most have many, many more millions to earn before getting anywhere close to joining the Billionaire’s Club.

Vicky Teoh, who founded TPG Telecom with her husband, is well ahead of the pack. Toga Group’s Charlotte Vidor takes the second spot, worth a reported $385 million, followed by Super Retail Group’s Hazel Rowe ($376 million) and Crazy John’s Patricia Ilhand ($366 million).
