In the final of the Women’s League Cup, Sam Kerr played her finest game of the season.

The Australian star scored a hat-trick for English heavyweights Chelsea FC, leading the team to a whopping 6-0 win over Bristol City.

The Matildas captain scored the opening goal within the first 90 seconds of the final, and the second soon followed at the 10-minute mark. In a dominating performance, Chelsea went into the half time break with a 4-0 lead. Kerr’s third goal came just three minutes into the second half.

The hat-trick from Kerr took her season goal tally across all competitions to an impressive 16 goals, with the Women’s League Cup final perhaps being one of her finest performances since moving to the English club.

“It’s what I came to Chelsea for,” said Kerr after the final. “It was a massive team performance. We wanted to retain it and with the performance today, we really deserved it.”

While Kerr has restrained her usual back flip celebrations since moving to Chelsea, she couldn’t resist showing her excitement with her trademark flip after scoring her second goal.

“Everybody’s been waiting for it, so it was fun,” Kerr said about the backflip celebration.

“I’m a bit tired from all of the games we’ve had recently, to be honest, and I nearly didn’t make it! But the girls had been asking to see it.”

“We were unbelievable for 60 minutes, the pace, intensity and movement,” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes told BT Sport.

“It was a great team performance across the board. Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr were unbelievable.”
