Presenting to the board is like public speaking in front of the most important people in your career.
And let’s face it, that can make addressing the heavyweights in your industry seem absolutely petrifying!
But instead of looking at the situation as something you dread, see it as an opportunity to showcase who you are and what you can do for the company.
This is your one opportunity to stand in the spotlight and shine.
- Be prepared: Make sure you know each board member in detail including their position, interests and work history. Have all the information required of you. Make clear notes days before the presentation. Don’t put a foot through the door if you’re unprepared. Think ahead of the questions they may ask you so you are ready and rehearse your answers. Have additional informational available on hand too; it is best to have more than what is required and not use it, then less and have the board request it.
- Practice: If you need to present results or discuss a new project, make sure you have practiced just like you were being paid to present to a group of professionals. This is NOT the time to “wing it”.
- Be respectful: Regardless of your role, age or the type of business, you should always show respect to the board. This means dressing the part, ensuring you’re not too familiar with them all and know when to zip it. Err on the side of formal.
- Have solutions: If you happen to be presenting bad news, remember the all-so-important rule: never present a problem unless you are also offering multiple solutions. Bad news is a reality of business; don’t let it consume or dampen your presentation. Put your ideas forward with confidence and show your genuine passion to help the business keep its resilient attitude and continue moving on. Overall, make sure you are prepared, focused, respectful and passionate when presenting to any board. And remember: whatever you lack in talent you can make up with enthusiasm.
