New South Wales Police have confirmed that a suitcase dumped on the side of the road in Oallen, south of Goulburn, did not not contain human remains, as had been initially reported.
Police initially said what they believed to be the body of a woman had been found inside a suitcase on the side of the road on Sunday afternoon in a “state of decomposition”.
On Monday morning, Supt Linda Bradbury told a press conference that further examination had revealed there was no human body in the suitcase.
“We don’t have a suspicious death of a human on our hands,” Superintendent Bradbury said.
“They were mistaken for a human originally, so they are very realistic in terms of looking like human remains.”
It has not yet been revealed what the remains are, with forensic testing ongoing.
Two members of the public were out for a drive when they stopped at Wolgon Road at Oallen by chance and discovered the suitcase. They alerted authorities at about 12.50pm on Sunday afternoon, which initially sparked a homicide investigation.
The homicide investigation has been abandoned.
Oallen is located on the Shoalhaven River and is about 61 km southeast of Goulburn.
