Does engaging senior male leaders help close the gender pay gap?

Last week, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) published base salary and total remuneration median gender pay gaps for private sector employers in Australia with 100 or more employees.

This landmark data release exposes the commitment of Australian companies to closing the gender pay gap for good.

Australia’s total remuneration average gender pay gap is 21.7 per cent. That means that for every $1 on average a man makes, women earn 78c. Over the course of a year, that difference adds up to $26,393.

WGEA reports that across all employers, 50 per cent have a gender pay gap of over 9.1 per cent. Thirty per cent of employers have a median gender pay gap between the ‘target range’ of -5 per cent and +5 per cent, while 62 per cent of median employer gender pay gaps are over 5 per cent and in favour of men. The rest (8 per cent) are less than -5 per cent and in favour of women.

Today, we look at the gender pay gaps of some of the companies involved in the Champions of  Change Coalition

Founded by Australia’s longest serving Sex Discrimination Commissioner (2007-2015), Elizabeth Broderick AO, this group focuses on pushing men of power and influence to step up to help achieve gender equality and a significant and sustainable increase in the representation of women in leadership.

The Champions of Change Coalition is made up of CEOs, government secretaries, NEDs and community leaders, with members covering every major sector of the economy and include representatives from business, government, community, academic and not-for-profit organisations.
