In news that won’t surprise regular newspaper readers, women continue to account for just a fraction of the experts quoted by journalists or published as commentators.

There’s “a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women”.

A few months ago I sat opposite Nicola Hazell at BlueChilli’s Sydney office, and watched as she used a whiteboard marker on a table to outline a vision for transforming gender diversity in the tech startup scene.

How could anything remotely positive stem from a woman enduring the ignominy of being followed by photographers and having images of her going about her Sunday splashed across the internet, calling for particular attention to be paid to her underwear? It seems oxymoronic to suggest there is any upside.

“I’ve got to get better at being a dad, and a partner, being around a bit more, not being stressed and knackered when I am,” he said.

It’s not every day that women’s sports makes the front page of any newspaper, let alone a national broadsheet like The Australian.
