I was sitting in a women’s lunch recently where the question was asked: “What do you think is the key barrier to your professional development?” Again and again, participants would answer with something like: “I just really need a mentor.

The desire to achieve authenticity at work – and be confident, grounded and “true to self” – is a familiar aspiration for working women.

This month I had the opportunity to again chair the Women in Leadership conference in Brisbane, showcasing some of Australia’s most successful and highly influential female and male leaders discussing the challenges and opportunities for women in the workplace today.

In the 15 years I have worked with professionals on their presentation skills, I have discovered that there are very few of us for whom presenting comes naturally.

Ask anyone how they are these days and you’ll get a common reply: “busy!”  In most organisations, being busy is worn like a badge of honour.
