All the times the PM’s photo ops have failed

Scott Morrison

Prime Minister Scott Morrison spent some time on the weekend setting up his family’s Christmas decorations, taking the opportunity to post the photos on social media.

After a chaotic last parliamentary sitting week for 2021, where Morrison effectively lost control of his backbenchers and had to face the findings of Kate Jenkins’ inquiry into the workplace culture in parliament, the Prime Minister was clearly keen to change the narrative.

“And the Christmas lights are up! Don’t think our dog Buddy is very happy with his outfit though,” Morrison captioned the post.

With Christmas nearly upon us, we thought we’d take the opportunity to remind you of some other times Morrison’s photo ops on social media have miserably backfired.

Hawaii

Images of the 2019 bushfire crisis have been seared into the memories of so many Australians.

And who could forget this one, of Morrison posing with some tourists in Hawaii against an idyllic ocean background, at the same time towns all over Australia were burning?

“I don’t hold the hose, mate,” he offered when asked why he took a family trip during the crisis.

Bushfire handshake

After Morrison had made his way back to Australia, his presence in bushfire impacted regional towns did not always go down well with locals. Remember this one of him trying to shake hands with a young woman in Cobargo?

The image and video of the incident went viral around the world, with the woman clearly not wanting to shake his hand.

Father’s day

On Father’s Day last year, Morrison shared this image of his family with a dove. He posted the image while more than half of the Australian population was in lockdown, separated from family members due to border closures.

In the post, he noted the image was from earlier in the year, but did not mention that he had travelled to from Canberra to Sydney to see his family, leading some to say he had tried to conceal his trip from the public.

He had been given an exemption to travel by private jet from Canberra to Sydney.
