Amy Schumer has posted a facetious ‘apology’ on her socials after a post she made of Nicole Kidman at the US Open drew criticisms of cyberbullying.
On Monday, the 42-year old comedian shared a photo of Kidman in the stands watching the US Open Women’s Finals match between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, accompanied by the caption: “This how human sit.”
On Instagram, Schumer was criticised for being “mean” and of “mean girl public trolling.”
“What point are you trying to make here?” one user asked. “This post seems beneath you.”
Other comments included, “Are you cyber-bullying Oscar and Emmy winner Nicole Kidman right now” and “Bringing others down is always a sign of our own internal insecurities anyway, so the critics here should hold a mirror.”
Amid the backlash, Schumer deleted the post. Shortly after, she posted an ‘apology’ which read: “I want to apologize to all the people I hurt posting a photo of Nicole Kidman and alluding to her being an alien.”
“I will be asking the cast of That ’70s Show to write letters advocating for my forgiveness. #takingtimetoheal.”
Schumer was poking fun at the handful of high profile cast members of the period sitcom That ‘70s Show after some of them controversially provided positive character letters in support of former co-star Danny Masterson – who was last week sentenced to 30 years in jail for raping two women in the early 2000s.
Among the stars who offered character letters for Masterson include Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunism, Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith.
Schumer has a history of poking fun at celebrities and causing Hollywood gossip-lovers to scratch their heads. In 2021, she posted this quizzical message on her Instagram about her friend, Emma Stone – whose new film Cruella had just been released.
“It’s well known Emma stone is a toxic person but @disneycruella is amazing!!” she wrote on her stories.
It is widely assumed that the post was an example of Schumer’s usual brand of ‘internet sarcasm’.
