Former Australian of the Year Professor Michelle Simmons AO has been appointed to The Tech Council of Australia’s (TCA) Board of Directors.

Professor Simmons is a globally recognised quantum physicist and deep-tech entrepreneur, as well as the CEO and founder of the world-leading Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC), which was spun out of the University of New South Wales.

She’s a leading voice in Australia’s efforts to enhance sovereign capability in emerging and critical technologies.

Her appointment comes at a significant moment, during the UN’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

“It is an honour to be joining the TCA board at a time when our nation’s technology sector is at an inflection point,” Professor Simmons said. “Technology is a vital pillar of our economy and I look forward to working with the TCA.”

She is a founding member of the TCA’s Australian Quantum Alliance, which is dedicated to creating a thriving domestic quantum industry enabling innovation, jobs and economic prosperity.

In 2018, Professor Simmons was recognised as Australian of the Year for her work and dedication to quantum information science. She has also twice been awarded a Federation Fellow and now a Laureate Fellow, the Australian Research Council’s most prestigious awards of this kind.

Bringing vast experience to the role, Professor Simmons will ensure TCA, the united voice of the nation’s leading technology companies, continues to support a diverse range of companies, from startups to multinationals.

“Michelle’s extensive experience in quantum computing and commercialisation brings a unique perspective and capability to our leadership team,” said TCA Chair Scott Farquhar.

“Her appointment will help support the TCA’s goal of supporting the growth of the Australian quantum industry and deep tech.”

CEO of the TCA Damian Kassabgi said Professor Simmons’ expertise would be invaluable to the Board, which also includes leaders from software, fintech, AI and digital platforms.

“Michelle is a respected voice across industry, research, and the commercial sector, known for her ability to communicate complex ideas and lead high-performing teams,” Mr Kassabgi said.
