‘Don’t talk too much, wear a colourful top’: Want a promotion? Fox News is here to help

In what is fast becoming a regular segment in questionable conversations concerning women, Fox and Friends this week has some vital advice for women who want to get ahead in the workplace.

Sylvia Ann Hewlett, a self-described expert on gender and workplace issues, appeared on the Fox News show on Monday to promote her book Executive Presence and shared what she calls a woman’s ‘secret weapon’ in the workplace.

According to Hewlett, this secret weapon — also known as presentation — will lead to a promotion. Here are a couple of her very practical pointers for the ladies who want to succeed at work:

Girls Gone Mild

Don’t raise your voice under pressure

“A little thing that you think is important is your presentation and your voice. Keep it low, don’t speak loud.”

Don’t ramble

Avoid “[filling] the air with words … often times that undermines you, just rambling”

Co-host Steve Doocy clarified the point, asking if that meant “don’t talk too much.”

“Exactly,” replied Hewlett.

Dress for your work environment

Do wear simple statement clothes, well-cut jeans with a colourful top

“You need to fit in with flair. In Silicon Valley, for instance, you know the nerdy, schlumpy, hoodie thing? That doesn’t work for women. And it’s there that the well-cut jeans and the statement top are important.”

And some advice for the men

“Men have to get outside of their own space and, instead of having binders full of women, actually figure out how to relate to them,” Hewlett said.

Fox co-host Brian Kilmeade clarified:

“Right, so show that you’re in touch with your emotions, but at the same time, show you’re really a man.”

So now they’ve has sorted out the workplace, they’re ready to help women learn how to stop being such bad wives.
