A 21-year-old man has been charged after a young woman was allegedly stabbed to death at a home in Sydney’s west in a suspected domestic-related homicide.

A 21-year-old woman was found by police with two stab wounds to the chest at a unit in Kingswood at about 1:40 pm on Monday. She was treated by paramedics for a long time but died at the scene.

Jeremaia Tuwai was charged this morning with domestic violence murder and will face Penrith Local Court after being refused bail.

New South Wales police Detective Superintendent Trent King told reporters on Monday that another person at the unit called emergency services to alert them of the incident. The woman and man lived in a share house with flatmates.

“It’s alleged that a 21-year-old male in a domestic relationship with this person is the perpetrator of this incident and had caused those injuries,” Superintendent King said.

Tuwai was allegedly seen running from the unit complex, sparking a manhunt in western Sydney. Officers arrested him at Derby Street in Penrith at around 7:10pm on Monday. He was taken to Penrith police station.

At the time of the manhunt, Superintendent King had said the man was wanted in relation to the woman’s death, and officers were “very keen to speak to this person”.

Neither Tuwai nor the woman had prior contact with the police over domestic violence issues.

The woman is yet to be formally identified. Police have established a crime scene and investigations are underway.

According to statistics from Destroy the Joint, this is the 40th woman’s life tragically taken by violence in Australia this year.
