Sydney has been chosen to host the 2027 Netball World Cup, with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Netball Australia Chair Paolina Hunt announcing the news on Monday.

It marks the fourth time Australia has been awarded the hosting rights for the sixteen-team international tournament and is the third time Sydney has been awarded the honour. 2027 also marks Netball Australia’s 100th anniversary.

Australia’s national team, the Diamonds, will head into the tournament in 2027 among the favourites to win. Australia were runners-up to New Zealand at the previous World Cup in Liverpool, England in 2019. In 2023, the World Cup is set to be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, before coming to Sydney four years later.

Netball Australia Chair Paolina Hunt said Australia’s successful bid for the 2027 World Cup would be critical to the continued development of netball.

“An enormous amount of work went into our bid and it’s thrilling to think that we can now begin to transform our vision into reality,” Hunt said.

“We know that netball plays a key role in connecting and empowering young women and girls and an event such as this is a North star for young athletes who can now dream of working to represent the Diamonds in front of huge home crowds.”’

Meanwhile, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the event would be a major boost, both economically and socially, to the state.

“We are delighted to be welcoming the world’s best netballers and their supporters and families to NSW for this event in 2027, which will deliver enormous economic and social benefits to our state for years to come,” Berejiklian said.

The New Zealand Silver Ferns are currently the reigning world champions after they defeated Australia by one goal in the 2019 World Cup final.

The 2027 Netball World Cup news also comes after Australia and New Zealand were last year announced as the hosts of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and as Sydney has been picked as hosts of the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
