Surfing champion Layne Beachley: Dissatisfaction helps me to maintain motivation

Layne Beachley is a seven time ASP Women’s World Champion and the most successful female surfer of all time. She holds the greatest number of consecutive world titles -‐ male or female — and pioneers commercial opportunities for women in the sport of surfing. From athlete to entrepreneur, her mission is to share the experiences that made her a champion, provide opportunities for women across Australia and inspire others to reach their personal best.

Growing up, what kind of career did you want to pursue?

As a kid i wanted to be a stockbroker, then a professional tennis player before i committed to becoming a world champion surfer at the age of 15.

Who is most surprised by your achievements?

Me

Who inspires you?

I draw inspiration from everywhere — people who succeed and achieve great things, people with humility and pride, music, nature, books, movies and friends.

What qualities do you most admire in a female colleague?

The quality I most admire is honesty.

You are a role model for women, how do you think you can assist in their success?

By supporting them in their path and reassuring them with a sense of belief and purpose which is essentially what I do with my Aim for the Stars Foundation.

How would you describe your ideal work day?

Surf two hours, work two hours, surf two hours, work two hours.

What’s the key to successfully balancing work and life?

Making time for the things you enjoy, committing to completing the things you don’t like, and making a living from a passion.

If you had an afternoon to yourself, how would you spend it?

Surfing

What makes you happy?

Surfing, sunshine, my husband, love, good food, good friends and being organised.

What personal attributes have you used to overcome adversity in your life?

The three pillars to my success are desire, drive and determination. I must also add dissatisfaction to the mix as that allowed me to maintain motivation and conviction. Desire to be the best I can be, drive to surround myself with knowledgable and positive people, and determination to overcome challenges and set backs.

What are your life goals from here?

To continue to learn, grow, support others and live a life that i love. Oh, and to surf every day!

What’s your motto?

Never give up
