Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman and other Hollywood legends lead Golden Globe nominations

Actors Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie have been nominated for Golden Globes for their roles in films that have also received nods across multiple categories. 

Kidman was nominated for best female actor in a motion picture, drama for her role in Halina Reijn’s Babygirl — an erotic feature about a powerful CEO who gets involved with a younger male employee.

She competes with Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl; Angelina Jolie for Maria; Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door; Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here and Kate Winslet for Lee, where she plays famed war photojournalist Lee Miller, which was co-written by Australian screenwriter, John Collee.

Winslet is also in the running for best performance by a female actor in a limited series for her role in Will Tracy’s political satire The Regime

The actors vying for best female actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy is equally star-studded, and include Cynthia Erivo for Wicked; Mikey Madison for Anora, Zendaya for Challengers and Amy Adams for Nightbitch. In the film, which was based on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 book of the same name, Adams plays a young artist mother who begins to exhibit canine tendencies as she struggles with domestic duties as a stay-at-home caregiver to her infant child.

French director Jacques Audiard’s eleventh feature, Emilia Pérez leads the nominations, securing a total of ten, including best director, best screenplay, best non-English motion picture and best female actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy for its leading star — Karla Sofia Gascón. 

In the crime musical, which also stars Selena Gomez (who is nominated for best supporting actress), Gascón plays a Mexican cartel kingpin who transitions to a woman. If she wins, the 52-year old Spanish actress will be the second trans actor to win a Golden Globe. 

In the best director category, French director Coralie Fargeat and Indian director Payal Kapadia were the only women nominated. Fargeat’s second feature, The Substance, which stars Demi Moore, has also been nominated for best motion picture, comedy or musical, best screenplay, best supporting actress (Margaret Qualley) and best actress (Demi Moore).

Kapadia’s film, ‘All We Imagine as Light’ has also been nominated for best non-English movie. Earlier this year, the film took home the prized Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. 

Selena Gomez received two nods — best performance by a female actor in a supporting role for her role in Emilia Pérez, and best performance by a female actor in a television series-musical or comedy for Only Murders in the Building

Meanwhile Jon M. Chu’s highly popular adaptation of Wicked received only a few nods, including for best motion picture, comedy or musical, cinematic and box office achievement, best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture (Ariana Grande) and best performance by a female actor (Cynthia Erivo). 

Viola Davis will be honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the ceremony in January next year, joining a list of honorees including Barbra Streisand, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington and Robert Redford. 

The ceremony, which will take place January 5, 2025 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and will be hosted by American comedian and actor, Nikki Glaser.
