Queensland senator Larissa Waters has been elected as the new leader of The Greens.
Waters takes on the leadership following a party vote on Thursday in Melbourne. It follows the shock defeat of previous leader, Adam Bandt, who lost his seat of Melbourne to Labor’s Sarah Witty at the election.
Waters faced competition for the leadership from Sarah Hanson-Young and Mehreen Faruqi.
Faruqi was elected as deputy leader and Hanson-Young will be the Greens Manager of Business.
Following the election, the Greens now have 11 senators and one lower house MP, Elizabeth Watson-Brown.
Larissa Waters was first elected to the Senate in 2010. She had been the co-deputy leader of the party from 2015 to 2022. She has been a party spokesperson for women, as well as the party leader in the Senate.
Before entering politics, she was a community environmental lawyer.
Waters is expected to speak at a press conference later on Thursday afternoon.
