New allegations of sexual misconduct against Brett Kavanaugh

Brett Kavanaugh
Over the weekend, The New York Times released fresh allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was sworn in last October after one of the tightest margins in the Senate voting history of 50-48.

The new information came in the form of an extract to a forthcoming book by reporters Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly titled ‘The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation,’ in which a woman by the name of Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale student, accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct – including an evening where he “thrust his penis in her face, prompting her to swat it away and inadvertently touch it.”

At least seven people ‘heard about the Yale incident long before Mr. Kavanaugh was a federal judge,’ the journalists reported.

Democratic members have come out on Twitter in full force, calling for Kavanaugh’s impeachment. Kamala Harris accused Kavanaugh of lying to the U.S Senate and said his place on the Court is ‘an insult to the pursuit of truth and justice.’

Elizabeth Warren declared the newest revelations ‘disturbing’, and, ‘like the man who appointed him, Kavanaugh should be impeached.’

Beto O’Rouke also pitched into the rage, saying ‘We know he lied under oath.’

Republican leaders though have condemned the new information, calling it irresponsible. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a tweet, ‘The American people rallied behind timeless principles such as due process and the presumption of innocence. I look forward to many years of service to come from Justice Kavanaugh.’

President Donald Trump tweeted that his Department of Justice should ‘rescue’ the 54-year old Justice, adding that he ought to ’start seeing people for libel.’

Unfortunately, the reality of impeachment is unlikely. Currently, the Democrats control the House. But if they decide to take this path, a trial would need to ensue in the Senate, and the Senate is not controlled by the Democrats; it’s currently majority Republicans. Hence, unlikely that Kavanaugh would make his exit this way.

Next month, Women’s March are planning a demonstration to protest Kavanaugh and his work to overturn Roe v. Wade.
