Women to watch for at 2023 Golden Globes

All eyes on women at this year’s Golden Globes

Globes

The Golden Globes is returning to screens this year, after controversies over the past 24 months saw its longstanding broadcaster, NBC pull out until the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organisation behind the Globes) promised to enact “meaningful reform.”

In February 2021, the primetime award show was exposed by the Los Angeles Times to have many problems, including no black members in its cohort, allegations of bribery and unethical breaches.

This year, it seems that the issues have been (for the moment) swept under the carpet. Before we see how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) handle this, we’re taking a quick look at our favourite actors to watch as the ceremony takes place in Beverly Hills.

A monstrously talented list of women are nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama this year, including Cate Blanchett for Tár, Olivia Colman for Empire of Light, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans and Viola Davis for The Woman King

Blanchett is not the only Aussie nominated in this year’s categories; Margot Robbie is also nominated for her role in Babylon – Damien Chazelle’s fourth feature film. Competing with her in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture – musical or comedy is Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Emma Thompson for Good Luck To You, Leo Grande and Anya Taylor-Joy for The Menu.

Everything Everywhere All At Once snapped up a total of six nominations, including Jamie Lee Curtis’ for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay for its creators, the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert).

Sadly, no films in the Best Picture category were directed by women this year, though one female writer, Sarah Polley, was nominated for Best Screenplay for Women Talking – the novel based on real-life events written by Miriam Toews in 2018. Polley also directed the film, which stars Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand.

The only woman to be nominated in Best original score – motion picture category was Hildur Guðnadóttir for the same film. Guðnadóttir is unfortunately used to being the only woman in her category. Two years ago, she was the only woman to be nominated for an Oscar in her category for her original compositions for Joker.

Finally, we’re all keen to see how our favourite actors from our favourite show, The White Lotus, Season 2, will be doing.

Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza are competing against each other in the same category ( Best supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie) alongside huge names like Claire Danes for Fleishman is in Trouble and Daisy Edgar—Jones for Under the Banner of Heaven. The series is also nominated for Best limited series or TV movie.
