Australia beat England to win ‘truly special’ Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup

Women T20 World Cup

The Australian Women’s Cricket Team has added another ICC T20 World Cup trophy to its collection with a seven-wicket victory over England.

The final took place at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in front of a 28,000-plus crowd. It marks Australia’s seventh Women’s T20 World Cup title out of the 10 that have taken place. The Australian team has won 14 World Cups overall.

Opener Beth Mooney led Australia’s chase against England, scoring 64 off 49, while Phoebe Litchfield hitting 48 off 35 balls. Australia finished with 153/3 in 17.1 overs.

It is the first World Cup that Australia has won under the leadership of new captain, Sophie Molineux.

“It’s gone to plan. We’ve been playing the way we wanted to play all tournament,” Litchfield after the win.

“Internally, we knew we were a bloody good side, and Sophie has done an incredible job, setting us up physically and mentally.”

Veteran Ellyse Perry said the World Cup win was “truly special”.

“The atmosphere and the occasion have been absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “We’re so grateful to have the opportunity to play here at Lord’s.”

“It has been a joy to be a part of this team with Sophie leading in her first World Cup. This has been a privilege of a lifetime.”

Australia finished the tournament with five wins from five in the group stage. They went on to beat the West Indies and England in the knockout rounds.

Mooney became the first player to be named Player of the Tournament twice, having previously received the award during the 2020.

“We’ve been talking about this (World Cup) for a long time. It’s been six months of really deliberate conversation and training to prepare us for a day like today,” captain Molineux reflected after the match.

“We’re in the business of trying to get better. So I’m sure we’ll celebrate this, and it rolls on pretty quickly. We don’t think we’ve reached any ceilings yet.

“I hope it becomes one of the great sides. We haven’t won one of these for a while, so hopefully we can keep this momentum going.”
