Australian actor Sarah Snook has picked up her third Critics Choice awards nomination for her role as Shiv Roy in the HBO drama series Succession.
Back in 2020 and 2022, she was nominated for the same role in the “Best Actress in a Drama Series” category. She secured the win in 2022.
The cast and crew of Succession nabbed a total of five Critics Choice nominations, with the show itself picking up a nomination for “Best drama series.
This year, Snook is joined by nominees including Jennifer Aniston (Morning Wars), Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Reese Witherspoon (Morning Wars).
Morning Wars– known as The Morning Show outside of Australia– starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon leads the television contenders with six nominations overall.
Leading the Australian nominees alongside Snook is Bluey, nominated for best animated series.
Winners of the Critics Choice Awards are decided by a consensus of leading critics and entertainment journalists who cover film and TV as a profession. This is different from the Oscars and the Emmys, which are voted on by those who make movies and TV.
At this year’s Emmys, Snook was nominated for the third time for her role in Succession as well, joining a host of other Australian women, including Anna Torv and Kim Gehrig.
For the second consecutive year, comedian Chelsea Handler will host the Critics Choice awards, saying she’s “excited” for the upcoming ceremony as “last year was one of the most fun nights I’ve had”, adding that “there is no greater reward than making fun of actors and then getting drunk with them afterward. It’s an honour”.
The 2024 Critics Choice Awards will be broadcast at 11am AEDT on January 15. The ceremony has yet to be picked up by an Australian broadcaster, but will likely be a major network that grabs it: 7, 9, or 10. It’s also been available to livestream via the Critics Choice website in recent years.
