'Some girls like being wolf-whistled' according to One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts

One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts says ‘some girls like being wolf-whistled’.

In the history of the world has a man ever won the attention and affection of a woman with a wolf-whistle?

One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts seems to think so. Speaking to Patricia Karvelas on ABC Radio on Monday evening he said some girls think it’s “wonderful”.

He suggested the proof of this is because they sometimes “smile”.

Here’s a hot tip: people don’t always smile out of joy and wonder. Sometimes people smile because they want to defuse a situation. Sometimes they smile out of panic. They hope if they smile and walk really fast they will escape unscathed.

The experience of being wolf-whistled at by a stranger is unnerving.

Of course there are some circumstances where a wolf whistle isn’t: in private. Where there is an existing relationship.

But a wolf whistle – in public – from a stranger is more frightening than flattering. Amazingly being treated like a dog, or a chattel available for public consumption, is off-putting.

We’ll let Linda Burney have the last word on whether girls like being wolf-whistled.
