Sexists can ‘get out’: Army Chief

Australian Army Chief David Morrison has delivered a stern warning to Army personnel: If you think the degradation, humiliation or exclusion of your female colleagues is acceptable you can “get out”.

Following Morrison’s address to the media yesterday – noting that a number of people of varying ranks were being investigated over “derogatory, demeaning and repugnant” emails – he offered the direct piece to camera warning Army personnel that those who think it’s ok to demean and humiliate others have no place in the service.

“I will be ruthless in ridding the army of people who cannot live up to its values,” he said.

“You may find another employer where your attitude and behaviour is acceptable, but I doubt it. The same goes for those who think that toughness is built on humiliating others.”

He said women serve a vital role in the Army. “On all operations, female soldiers and offices have proven themselves worthy of the best traditions of the Australian army. They are vital to us maintaining our capability now and into the future. If that does not suit you, then get out.”

He also urged others who witness behaviour that’s demeaning to others to “show moral courage and take a stand”.

“The standards you walk past are the standards you accept. That goes for all of us, but especially those who by their rank have a leadership rank.

“If you’re not up to it, find something else to do with your life. There is no place for you amongst this band of brothers and sisters.”
