Sam Kerr has become Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer in England’s Women’s Super League (WSL), after securing her 64th goal in the League in a match against Leicester City over the weekend.

In their comfortable 3-1 win over the Foxes, Kerr made her historic shot into the bottom corner in the 13th minute, surpassing her past former teammate Fran Kirby’s WSL goals tally for Chelsea. Shortly after, forward Lauren James secured two dazzling goals within six minutes of each other before half time.

“There have been some pretty special goals in my career, but I don’t know if it gets more special than this,” said Kerr after the game

“I probably didn’t play as much as I would have liked at the start of the season but you’ve seen when I get rhythm and games under my belt I start scoring. I’ve not scored as many in the league as I’d have liked, but to come back from an ACL and still be top scorer in the league for a club like Chelsea is great.”

On the club’s X site, she added, “I’m absolutely stoked to break the record, absolutely honoured. It’s been amazing to score 64 goals in front of all of you – let’s finish off the season strong.”

Fans are questioning whether the match marked Kerr’s second-to-last appearance in the WSL, as speculation grows that the striker could be heading to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with Denver Summit.

As her London contract approaches its end, a return to the US (she’s had previous stints with Sky Blue FC and the Chicago Red Stars) highlights the US league’s bold ambitions as it continues to grow.

Nevertheless, Sunday’s win has secured a third place guarantee, ensuring Chelsea will be playing the Champions League football again next season. Her team’s win also marks a return to form for the 32-year old Australian, after a long absence following an ACL injury  over two years ago.

Ahead of the finals at West Ham United on May 16, Manchester City are closing in on their first Women’s Super League title since 2016, sitting top of the table on 52 points with one game remaining and already beyond the reach of second-placed Chelsea, who trail by six points.
