Who will replace Gillian Triggs as head of Human Rights Commission?

Rosalind Croucher is a frontrunner to replace Gillian Triggs as head of the Australian Human Rights Commission, according to Fairfax reports today.

Michael Koziol writes today that a number of sources have indicated Croucher will be approached for the job by Attorney-General George Brandis in the near future.

Croucher is currently president of the Australian Law Reform Commission. She had a long and distinguished academic career prior to joining the ALRC and has held a number of academic legal positions with the University of NSW, University of Sydney and Macquarie University. She was Dean of Law at Macquarie from 1999 until her appointment to the ALRC in 2007.

She is today releasing the ALRC’s final report into the abuse of older Australians by carers.

The Australian has previously reported that tennis champion and outspoken opponent of marriage equality Margaret Court has lobbied a number of political figures to back legal academic Augusto Zimmermann for the role. In an applications to John Howard, she and her husband Barry write that Zimmermann is a “good Christian” and should be considered, according to The Australian.

Professor Trigg’s term ends in July.
